Parenthood and Unplugging

Starting November 1st, I will be unplugging from the web. My wife and I are expecting our first child December 4th, and I can think of no better reason to spend some time away.

I'm going to start a month early because unplugging is going to be hard, and I want some time to practice.

I will continue working, Crowd Favorite is wonderfully busy, and we're hiring. Please understand if I do take more time to respond to work requests.

Starting November 1st, here's what will change:

  • I won't be checking email regularly. If you email me and I don't respond, please be patient. I will be trying to keep up.
  • I won't be on any Instant Messanger network.
  • I won't be tracking any of the social networks I'm involved with, including Facebook and MySpace.

This is an exciting time for me and I appreciate your patience as I shift my focus away from the online world.

Parenthood Update, Refresh Denver talk rescheduled, jQuery

Parenthood Update
It finally happened!!! As I eluded to previously, I've finally become a father. My beautiful baby girl arrived over the weekend and is completely perfect.

Refresh Denver Rescheduled
Unfortunately, (although I personally didn't mind, Smiling), I wasn't able to make it to the Refresh Denver meeting Monday night to give my talk about jQuery. I heard several people showed up just to hear about jQuery, and I do apologize for letting them down. Matt has graciously rescheduled my talk for February.

jQuery call for help
As I was killing time last week, I got caught up on some of my work with the jQuery project. Turns out, I was promoted and didn't even know it. I'm now the only contributor, besides John, who's helping maintain the jQuery.com website. If you've got experience with system administration on the Linux platform and would like to help, please contact me.

Parenthood and Unplugging Update
About a month back, I wrote a post about my grandiose plans to unplug from the net in preparation for parenthood. I thought it'd be fun to post a quick update on how I've been doing. In one word, "utter failure". Ok, that was two words, but I needed two words to get my point across.

Given that I only have two days of parenthood under my belt now, I do have two observations. One, trying to manifest the discipline for parenthood before it actually happened only created extra stress because I set my life stage to 'Parent' while still living like 'No Kids'. Second, the moment I held that baby in my arms the first time, I was confident I'll have no problem unplugging in the future. Smiling

Back in Action

I'm back in action after 3 weeks and almost 25,000 miles of traveling. I never want to see the inside of a plane again!

I'll be taking things a bit slowly this week. If you've contacted me while I'm gone, thanks for being patient as I work through my stack. Smiling

On Vacation

Things have been a little crazy in my world lately. However, today I'm heading out on a three week vacation to the land down under. My wife and I will be traveling to Sydney, Ayers Rock and Port Douglas for some much needed R & R.

Thanks for reading, I'll definitely have lots to blog about when I get back.

Feed Weirdness

I've had some weird things going on in my feed the last few days. I tried installing a Drupal plugin that would route all my of my Feeds through FeedBurner. That didn't work so well, and somehow my comments feed got crossed with my main content feed.

I'd still like to route things through FeedBurner, but I am going to do some additional testing before I turn it on again.

Here's a list of the feeds that I publish on this site and their purpose.

Mike's Blog Feed
- This is a feed of only blog items from Mike's Blog.
Web Link Feed - This feed contains only web link content, which tend to be shorter entries.
Main Content Feed - This feed contains both Blog Items from all blogs and Web Links.
Comment Feed - A feed of comments from all places on the site.
All Content Feed - This feed contains all the content that I put up on the site, including new Project Issues, Documentation Pages, plus all of the content from the Main Content Feed.

Drupal has a syndication information page as well that contains many other "unofficial" feeds that are generated by this site.

New Site Features in response to QDrupal

I've re-configured the site to allow registrations and posting of issues against projects. If you use QDrupal and would like to let me know about an issue, please register for an account and post an issue to the queue on the QDrupal Project Page.

Thanks for all of the positive feedback about QDrupal, it's very encouraging. Smiling

Small Theme Update

I posted a small little theme update today. I hope you like it!

Server Outage

Last night a disk on the server crashed. I currently use Site5 for my hosting needs, and I have to say that I was very impressed.

Now, a disk crashing is something that you simply must accept when it comes to hosting a website. Where Site5 really set themselves apart was with their constant updates in their maintenance forum. I didn't even have to ask, they had the updates going on before I even realized the site was down. Good Job.

PS. That link above does have my referral ID, if you are looking for web hosting, please use it and check Site5 out.

Content Updates

As you may have noticed, the main page of my blog now includes additional content. I've finally ironed out the bugs of my linkblog and have included it in the main content stream.

Links are available by themselves via the Weblinks page. Blog posts are available by themselves as well on the Blog page. Both links are also available in the menu.
